The Society
The "Edmonton Committee" of the "Dante Alighieri Society" was established in 1961. Its main objectives are:
- To promote an appreciation of the Italian culture abroad;
- To promote closer ties among Italians abroad;
- To establish and direct courses of Italian Language and Culture for children and for adults of any national origin;
- To promote a better understanding and appreciation of the Canadian multicultural society and citizenship within the Italian community; and
- To establish a library open to the general public.
Special articles of its Constitution:
- The "Dante" does not discriminate on the basis of race, nationality, religious faith, or political ideology.
- The Committee operates within Canadian laws, and both Italian and English are used, according to circumstances, as official languages.
- The Committee cooperates with the democratically elected Italian government.
